Formed in 2006 by the United Nations General Assembly, which replaced the United Nations Commission on Human Rights-a United Nations body that had experienced widespread backlash for its member states' poor adherence to international human rights standards. Currently the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is located in Geneva, Switzerland, where they have a goal of upholding fundamental human rights across the world stage. Membership to this council is based upon election by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Today, the UNHRC examines human rights violations in United Nations member countries in accordance with a multitude of human rights conventions.
